Petals on the Wind is the second installment of the award-winning Dollanganger Series, set in the mid to late Sixties, Cathy Dollanganger leaves behind the only home she knew with her brother Christopher and her sister Carrie. The trio find a welcoming doctor that brings in the adolescents and treats them as his own.

Through the turmoil V.C. Andrews puts them through in the first book, the children struggle with relationships with others, both friendly and romantic. Along with their new home, Doctor Paul also enables them to follow their dreams and gives them opportunities to be normal children. Cathy pursues her passion for ballet while Christopher goes on to medical school and Carrie being significantly younger finishes high school at an all girls boarding school where darkness awaits her. The story takes place through several years and follows how each of the children deal with their tragedies.

I love this series because of the plot twist and gripping nature of Andrew's writing. As this is one of the only series published during her lifetime, it makes it that much more interesting. The second book is the most enjoyable to me because the story telling really begins when as in the first book Andrews focused on character development, which yes, is essential, but a bit boring.

Disclaimer: I would only recommend this series as a whole to adults who enjoy a mystery. I do not believe this is an appropriate series for children and teenagers as there are some explicit themes.
