Review #1: Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Stolen is the debut novel by Lucy Christopher published in 2009 but I first noticed the book in stores in 2017. The novel is set in a combination of the Australian desert and our protagonist's home in England.

Sixteen year old Gemma is on holiday with her family while on a layover in a Bangkok airport when she meets a handsome young man, Tyler, in a coffee shop. They immediately hit it off and Tyler offers to order her coffee. Ignoring her better judgment in letting a man in his early 20's into her space she sits and waits for him to return with her drink. Tyler comes and sits with her as they drink. As she sips her coffee she become lightheaded and confused. Gemma has been drugged.

They story progresses as a letter written by Gemma to her captor. The novel explores the ins and outs of kidnapping and roughing it in the Australian desert detached from society. It is a truly interesting take on kidnapping and obsession. Christophers diction and ability to create such vast images marks her as an incredible author. This is a great read and keeps you interested. I connected with Gemma and Tyler in a way different than I had expected and it made the story that much better.

I would recommend this book to any lover of Young Adult fiction. There are some more mature themes so I would recommend this to thirteen year old and older. This is a great summer read.
